Vancouver Island Fishing Reports

Nanaimo Update Fishing Report [11. Jun. 2008 - 09:28]

Nanaimo still appears to be rocking and on fire.  10th of June, a nice 34lb Spring off Neck Point on the slack tide, using a purple haze Krippled Anchovy head with a 5 inch Anchovy.

The weekend also saw a derby happening off the coast of Gabriola Island.  Reports were good for some guys, but not as impressive for others.  If I am not mistaken, the winner was 21lb, but keep in mind that we were battling some very big tides, and bad weather.

Silva Bay derby is coming up soon, and tickets are available at the store.  The Quenell Bass derby is also coming up this Fathers Day weekend, and is looking like a very full house.

I myself was on the West Coast, in 18ft swells with chop, and what felt like 50 mile per hour winds, with the rain.  Kudos to the guides that can put up with weather like that.  Just Fishin's Bill Von Brendel got us into 4 nice halibut, and limited us out for the day.  If any one is looking for a West Coast charter, I definately give Bill a thumbs up, and recommend his company.  There are many guides out of Ucluelet, which I know personally and also recommend their companies, for a good day of fishing.

So happy fishing to all

May-June Nanaimo Fishing Reports [ 5. Jun. 2008 - 14:48]

Well guys, what else can I say except Hooray!!!!!.

Fishing off Nanaimo and Gabriola has been fantastic this past Month.  It almost seems like we have more fish than our west coast counterparts.  I am sure that will change over the next month as the west coast picks up.

Fishing is still expected to remain very hot for the month of June as the fish continue to move in.  We have seen many fish in the high twenty pound range with most of them coming from Thrasher Rock, the Grande and Waterfall.

Reports now state that fish in the high 20's are being taken off Neck Pt and Clarke Rock.  Depths have ranged from 60 to 120 feet, with the Coyote green /white spoon and the Green splatterback hootchie as the favourite.

Reports from the Cannery indicate that the seals are creating a nuisance over there, but Neck Pt and the fingers seem to be okay.  We will try to continue bringing you the latest news every week, but if you have any questions, please give us a call.

Prawning is very slow, as the commercial boys are still hitting it hard, most likely into the middle of July.  Crabbing appears to be better down the N.Cumberland channel than the usual Departure Bay spots.

I am lucky enough to be going on a Halibut charter next week, and will give you a full report.

P.S We are encouraging any anglers who need licences to please look at the online options to purchase fishing licences, both fresh and tidal via internet.  The store gets very busy, and a fish hungry angler may have to wait awhile, for us to complete a licence.  If you come to the store for a licence, please bring cash if possible.  Regards Andy
